Windows 7 not genuine

Immediately after you log onto the Windows 7 computer, you will sometimes get the above Windows 7 not genius error message. In many cases, the error message occurs when there is a lack of permissions in the registry key HKU\S-1-5-20 even if the Microsoft copy on your PC is really genuine. If the Network Service account do not have full control and read permissions over that registry key, a “Windows 7 is not genuine” message will appear again and again.

We know that the licensing service uses Plug and Play to obtain hardware ID information and binds the license to the computer. Because of these settings, the computer can be properly. However, the default permissions of the Plug and Play policy do not grant the Licensing service the appropriate rights to access the Plug and Play service, causing the appearance of the “Windows 7 is not genuine” message after you log onto the system. So, the first thing you should do right now is to edit the permission of the Group policy:

*Go to Start, Run and enter rsop.msc and press Enter to go & open the Group Policy.
*Click the Edit Security button, and then go to the Advanced button.
*Within the Advanced Security Settings for Plug and Play window, click Add and then add the SERVICE account &press “OK” to continue.
*Select the following permissions in the Allow section and then click OK:
Query template
Query status
Enumerate dependents
Interrogate
User-defined control
Read permissions
* Run gpupdate /force after you apply the previous permissions to the Group Policy setting.
*Then restart the computer again to see whether this fixes the Windows 7 not genuine error message.

Sometimes, a missing registry key can also cause the Windows 7 not genuine error message to happen. If the message remains even though you have followed the above steps to edit the permission of the Group policy, modify the following registry keys:

*Open Registry Editor by going to Start, run and type “regedit”.
*Locate and right-click the registry key HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-20, and select Permissions.
* If the NETWORK SERVICE is not present, click Add…
* Within the “Enter the object names” dialogue, type “Network Service” and then click “Check Names” and OK.
*Select the NETWORK SERVICE and Grant Full Control and Read permissions.
*Restart the computer. In many cases, the system may require activation. Directly complete the activation and this will get rid of the “Windows 7 is not genuine” message.

But remember to first back up the Windows registry before making any change; otherwise, a simple mistake will bring in some further computer errors rather than the Windows 7 not genuine error message.
